Pre-class Assignment

Complete participation activities for sections 4.1 Logical Operations and 4.2 Instructions for making decisions. (FYI, I have rearranged some of the sections from last time in case you’ve been following along. I will always have the sections up to date by the end of the previous lecture.)

If you’d like to use your own laptop for the MIPS labs, download and install MARS. You may also need to download and install the Java SDK. Once you have downloaded MARS and installed the Java SDK, you should be able to double click the .jar file and MARS will open. If it gives you an error on mac, right click the file and open it.

• Homework 1 is out and will be due next Monday Jan 30th before lab at 1:10pm. Work can be submitted on Moodle.
• We will have our first lab Monday in Singer 221 at 1:15pm.
• Office hours: by appointment (email me if none of those times work)

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

In this lecture you will:

• listen to a short lecture reviewing MIPS branching
• work on challenge activities and labs in class to learn MIPS assembly

By the end of this lecture you should be able to:

• write MIPS programs that include program flow (conditional branches, used for the equivalent of if statements with comparisons and while loops)
