Announcements
- Homework 1 is out today and will be due next Monday Jan 30th before lab. Work can be submitted on Moodle. I will be available for help during lab period Monday Jan 23rd 1:15pm-4pm in Singer 221. (If I’m not there, check my office in Singer 233).
- Homework will be graded out of 3:
- 3: all or almost all correct (only minor errors)
- 2: all problems answered but major errors
- 1: not all problems answered but submitted
- 0: not submitted
- If you haven’t been able to get the zyBook yet, please complete the participation activities when you get your book; I’ll wait to grade for a few days so everyone can get caught up.
- Clarification on zyBooks responsibilities (more details here)
- Office hours: by appointment (email me if none of those times work)
- The goal of this is to be more flexible / have more times, but I'm also open to a regularly scheduled time! Feel free to come as a group.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
In this lecture you will:
- participate in a short lecture reviewing the three types of computing systems and seven great ideas in computer architecture
- list as many of the 7 great ideas of computer architecture as you can
- participate in a lecture introducing the idea of processor performance
- complete exercises evaluating processor performance
By the end of this lecture you should be able to:
- articulate several of the great ideas of computer architecture, and discuss how they are relevant to processor performance
- compare the performance or power utilization of two processors for a given task
